 Substance Abuse Assessment Unit

The Kwai Chung Hospital Substance Abuse Assessment Unit (SAAU) is one of eight substance abuse clinics under the Hospital Authority and was set up in 1995. It serves the population in Kwai Tsing, Sham Shui Po, Mong Kok, Tsuen Wan, North Lantau and Wong Tai Sin Districts.

Target Service Users

SAAU provides service to people abusing heroin, hypnotics, cough medicine, methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA, ketamine etc. and alcohol. Referrals can be made by social workers and doctors. Self-referral by dialing the hotline number: 29598082 is also accepted. SAAU provides services on voluntary basis including individual assessment, drug counseling, brief inpatient detoxification, outpatient and day hospital services.

Mode of Service

Experienced specialty nurses conduct holistic physio-psycho-social assessment to service users and applying motivational interviewing to assist them to enhance their motivation to manage their substance abuse. Psychiatric consultation and necessary investigations will be arranged. Service users will be facilitated to develop their treatment and relapse prevention plan. Timely and necessary referral to other counseling and rehabilitation agencies will be made for diminishing their risk of relapse.

Scope of Services

Inpatient detoxification service will be arranged after assessment and consultation. An inpatient detoxification normally takes two weeks.

In addition to inpatient service, day hospital and outpatient services are offered. Day hospital provides a comparatively free and flexible environment which enables the service users to receive treatment and take care of their families at the same time. Service users may choose to undergo a brief period of inpatient detoxification following by rehabilitation in Day hospital. However, specific service users may opt to have day patient or outpatient detoxification.

Other than medication treatment, SAAU joins with some NGOs to conduct therapeutic groups including relapse prevention, emotion management and personal growth in order to help the service users to maintain abstinence and reunion to the community.

In response to the changing drug trend and provide early education, prevention and intervention to the at risk youth, SAAU has joint programmes with Paediatric Department of Princess Margaret Hospital, the District Council and certain youth service agencies in provision of body check service.
